The Committee Releases Two New Letters from President Rebucas and Governor Malo

On August 13, 2020, the Young Leaders PAC issued two new letters, one from Governor Jacob D. Malo to Senator Kamala D. Harris in opposition to offshore oil drilling, and the other from President Raphi Rebucas to Senator Dianne Feinstein regarding the protection of religious freedoms.

President Rebucas and Governor Malo each authored separate memoranda today, individually on behalf of young leaders in the State of California. Governor Malo, who vowed to be strong on environmental issues at the beginning of his tenure, expressed his concerns for Senator Kamala D. Harris's (D-CA) "Aye" vote on the Great American Outdoors Act.

The Governor wrote:

Offshore oil drilling can cause great harm to marine ecosystems, which in return, can harm people of different coastal regions of the world or anyone who consumed seafood that was contaminated with the oil. With oil leaking from underwater pipes coming from an oil rig, an oil spill can occur, which causes the marine ecosystems around the spill to be greatly harmed, and the possible loss of human life can also occur.

President Rebucas, an ardent Catholic, expressed concern about religious persecution in the United States. The President wrote to Senator Feinstein, Ranking Member of the United States Senate Committee on the Judiciary, requesting that the committee take further steps to advance religious justice.

In his letter, the President cited that:

Since May, there have been more than twenty attacks on Catholic facilities across the nation. Hate groups, in more alarming rates than ever, continue to vandalize statues of the Virgin Mary, paint over holy articles, burn places of worship, and even behead statues of holy and virtuous people. In June, a prominent Black Lives Matter activist directly incited more of this abominable violence by stating that statues of Jesus Christ and his mother are "symbols of white supremacy" and "should come down." This is in addition to the already vicious hate by which Catholics in the United States have faced for generations.

Both Members of the Board of Governors await responses from the Senators, in hopes that the Senators will be enlightened by the needs of young leaders in the State of California. The Young Leaders PAC continues to communicate with elected representatives about the issues that matter most.
